scandinavian crampons
Can redesigning crampons increase the
usage amongst a younger target group?

Background
Scandinavia is known for its snowy and icy winter climate, therefore my Alexander Mucchiano Ahlström and I wanted to develop a unique seasonal product. We decided on redesigning crampons.
According to the Swedish Consumer Agency, 20,000 Swedes slip on ice or frozen pavements during winter. Often these falls can cause both serious injury or mental insecurity. The easiest way to prevent these accidents is by wearing anti-slip protection(crampons). We think the problem of why people do not use crampons is similar to other safety products such as not wearing bike helmets.
The elderly currently use anti-slip products. The existing products therefore have an image of being a product similar to a mobility aid. Not many of the younger generation want to use crampons, they rather risk falling than being associated with the elderly. However, one of the main reasons why this demographic tends to disassociate with crampons is style question rather than the primary factor of the functional need; physical security. Therefore, our goal has been to change the expression of the crampons, as well as a shoe accessory. Our main goal is to reach out to a younger target group who would consider buying crampons. This target group would focus on a demographic between the age of 20-40. We believe they will be attracted through; understanding their need for crampons, their functionality, and their style.
This project have been developed as a collaboration in all aspects between Alexander and myself.

Development
We have been inspired by snow chains on car tires to highlight the practicality and make it part of the expression. Our anti-slip protection is, like classic crampons, adapted for the urban environment. They require less strength/ effort to be put on, take up little space, and are easy to clean.
Our design of the crampons is focused on exchanging as much plastic as possible for stainless steel, a degradable and recyclable material. The drawstring is made out of a strong elastic band with a toggle and can fit multiple shoes.
